WHY ARE WE HERE?
It has been our personal experience in operating businesses that there are times such as 9/11 or the current economic crisis when unforeseen circumstances cause a small business to either go bankrupt or out of business entirely. In seeking assistance, the owner is often disappointed when told, "You haven't been in business long enough or we need proof of income or ..." We are here to fill in the gap, to help the fledgling or troubled business get back up and running.

How will we help?
We will provide assistance through finding assisting clients in finding grants, loans, consultation, provision of training in areas of need or by referring individuals to other resources

MISSION STATEMENT
It is the vision of HERO to provide funds for entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals who are experiencing financial difficulty. Realizing that unpredictable circumstances can quickly put a small business in jeopardy and that financing is not readily available, it is our mission to be there when others are not.
To accomplish our mission, we will analyze each applicant's

present circumstance, evaluate current and future needs,

and provide training in areas of need.

The specific means for achieving our mission will be through donations, grants, conducting professional seminars, fundraising.

In order to preserve the small business heritage of the United
States of America, it is our secondary mission to encourage those we help (once financially secure and sound in business practices) to pass on their success to others in need.

Organization History & Goals

HERO was established in the year 2002.  It is the vision of HERO to provide assist in finding funds for entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals who are experiencing financial difficulty.  Realizing that unpredictable circumstances can quickly put a small business in jeopardy and that financing is not readily available, it is our mission to be there when others are not.  To accomplish our mission, we will analyze each applicant’s present circumstance, evaluate current and future needs, and provide training in areas of need.  The specific means for achieving our mission will be through donations, grants, conducting professional seminars and fund-raising.

In order to preserve the small business heritage of the United States of America, it is our secondary mission to encourage those we help (once financially secure and sound in business practices) to pass on their success to others in need.

HERO’s plan for institutional change is to reduce poverty and increase jobs. HERO will also encourage our recipients to hire low income or disabled individuals.  We believe this population of our society is highly ignored and often has prejudice against them by banks, institutions and creditors. This makes it difficult for them to achieve success.

HERO will have three ways to service the community.  1)  We offer classes in time management, advertising, marketing skills, organizing your business and office, promotion of business, personal dynamics, business taxes, goal setting and decision-making, business math skills, business finance, conflict management, writing a business plan, pricing insight, finding and writing grants, brain dominance & business, budgeting, income statements and balance sheets, computer skills and various craft classes, to name a few.  2) We offer one on one mentoring with small businesses which include services like tax preparation, applying for business names, discussing individual needs for their business, developing web sites, and creating business cards and business fliers.  3)  Hero seeks to build a community that empowers people to attain their full human potential, by being involved in community activities and events.  We offer a “Bartering Board” and Up North Information Center to better link the community and small businesses.

HERO Organization is located in Hale, Michigan, a small rural community in northeast Lower Michigan. Hale is the Plainfield Township seat.  Plainfield Township has a total population of 4,292 people with the following statistics; the average household income is $29,220, 10.2% of the people are self employed, 11.8% of the families and 15.3% of the individuals of Plainfield Township are living below the poverty level.  Northeast Lower Michigan has a higher percentage of self-employed, disabled, and low-income people than the State of Michigan or the U.S. The educational level is also lower than the rest of the state and the U.S.  HERO is currently servicing an eleven county area with most having an income level lower than Michigan and the U.S.

The main industry in the area is tourism. Northeast Michigan has many small lakes, the Lake Huron shoreline, State and National Forest. Since the majority of jobs are seasonal, individuals must rely on second incomes from self-employment, hobbies, or services to sustain financial independence. Many of these individuals have the ability to transform their "hobbies" into successful businesses, with the assistance of financial support and professional training.

HERO has contacted and is working on a relationship with Northwood University in Midland, Michigan, a small business college with programs for entrepreneurs.  We also are in contact with Alpena Community College. HERO has already met with Lydia Murray of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and we plan to work together to improve the benefits of our recipients. We are working with the MMI Youth Services. We continue to work with Senator Stamas’ office and  Governor Granholm’s office. Our other contacts include Michigan Works, Michigan Technology Development Centers, SBA and they also are willing to work with us in any capacity possible. We work with  referral of clients and classes being offered at our location.
